Mock Draft 1.0

Just a quick mock draft of the first 15 picks of the draft. I will update after the draft with a full first round and players I think the Lions should target in the later rounds.

1. St. Louis Rams: Jimmy Clausen- Quarterback Notre Dame- The Rams need a quarterback. Period. Marc Bulger is old and cannot keep up with the speed of the game anymore. Kyle Boller is a good backup, but that is it, just a back up. Clausen can come in, sit a year or two behind Boller or Bulger and then give him the reigns. Ndamukong Suh is a rare talent but a defensive tackle will not win you championships, a quarterback will.

2. Detroit Lions: Gerald McCoy- Defensive Tackle Oklahoma- The Lions front office has dropped hints that they feel McCoy is a better choice at the number 2 pick than Suh. The Lions need a big body in the middle of their defensive line and McCoy or Suh would be great picks. The main concern with Suh is his knee problems, and it's unclear if Lions want to risk it. Look for a DT to go here to Detroit.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ndamukong Suh- Defensive Tackle, Nebraska- The Bucs are jumping up and down in their draft room with Suh falling to them. The Bucs desperately need a powerful defensive tackle to clog up the middle. Their defensive line has not been the same since Warren Sapp jumped ship, and Suh will be able to start right away.

4. Washington Redskins: Anthony Davis- Offensive Tackle, Rutgers- The Redskins were in the bottom 5 of the league in giving up sacks and when quarterback Jason Campbell was not being sacked he was running for his life or having to release to early. Mike Shanahan is known for building from the trenches, look for the Redskins to draft the top OT here, right now that is Anthony Davis.

5. Kansas City Chiefs: Russell Okung- Offensive Tackle Oklahoma State- The Chiefs were bad last year at protecting their poor investment in Matt Cassel. They need a lot of help on the defensive end of the ball but this is a rather deep defensive draft and they can add good players in the second even third rounds.

6. Seattle Seahawks: Eric Berry- Safety, Tennessee- The Seahawks will take their full time to announce this pick. Not because they are debating who to take or entertaining trade offers, but because they best player in the draft fell to them at number 6. The Seahawks will greatly improve their defense here with this pick.

7. Cleveland Browns- Joe Haden- Cornerback, Florida- A quarterback is also a great possibility here with the current Brown regime not liking the way Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson play quarterback. The Browns late wins took them out of the running for the playmaking safety or the massive defensive tackles but the ballhawking Joe Haden is an excellent consolation prize.

8. Oakland Raiders: Bruce Campbell- Offensive Tackle, Maryland- Anyone who runs a sub 4.5 40 in the combine is a possibility here but Campbell is a very athletic tackle who will catch Davis' eye, he wont run a sub 4.5 40 but Al Davis had to have learned his lesson by now...right?

9. Buffalo Bills: Sam Bradford- Quarterback, Oklahoma- The Bills have one of, if not the, worst quarterback situations in the NFL. The needs of the top 8 here allow the would have been number 1 overall pick in last years draft.

10. Denver Broncos: Dez Bryant- Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State- Bryant was suspended all last season, if he had actually gotten to play he probably would have won the Biletnikoff Award and gotten to be a top 5 pick. This guy is a game changer at the wide reciever position. Brandon Marshall says he wants to stay in Denver but Bryant would be a great back up plan. If Marshall does stay then the Broncos will have 2 great receivers and look how well that worked for the Arizona Cardinals.

11. Jacksonville Jaguars: Derek Morgan- Defensive End, Georgia Tech- The Jaguars only sacked the quarterback 14 times, that was by far the worst in the NFL. Morgan is used to getting to the quarterback sacking the quarterback 12 times last season. The Jaguars biggest need is a consistent quarterback but any quarterback here would be a huge reach, including Tim Tebow.

12. Miami Dolphins: Rolando McClain- Middle Linebacker, Alabama- The Dolphins biggest need is true number one wide receiver but Bill Parcells has only taken a wide out once in the first round. Rolando McClain is the best player on the board and a great pick for the Dolphins.

13. San Francisco 49ers: Bryan Bulaga- Offensive Tackle, Iowa- The 49ers need help on the offensive line. Their pass rush was in the top 10 of the NFL and a healthy Frank Gore and Glenn Coffee will be a nice duo out of the backfield. They need a number 2 receiver to take some heat off of Michael Crabtree but any receiver here will be a reach.

14. Seattle Seahawks: C.J. Spiller- Running Back, Clemson- The Seahawks do not have a true number one running back and C.J. Spiller has the size and speed to be a great back in the NFL

15. New York Giants: Earl Thomas- Safety, Texas- The Giants had a really disappointing season in 2009 mainly due to a injury riddled secondary. Earl Thomas can come in and make an impact on this defense from day one.
